A filmic exchange between three authors, blending not only stories but diverse methods and film formats: Sofia Bohdanowicz shoots on 16 mm colour film, Burak Çevik on 4K video (post-processed to resemble film down to the aspect ratio and rounded corners), Blake Williams participates with conspicuously digital 3D videos. All three play fictionalized versions of themselves, Bohdanowicz once again through her avatar Audrey Benac. The operative word is escape, as mentioned in the Bresson-referencing title: Audrey tends to the Paris apartment of her deceased friend (the real-life protagonist of Bohdanowicz’s sole non- Benac feature, the documentary Maison du bonheur, 2017), Burak travels through Turkey processing a painful break-up, Blake (whom the fictional Audrey has split up with) is stuck at home in Canada. As in the short film Point and Line to Plane (2020), art presents itself as a potential refuge.
The screening starts with Bohdanowicz’s latest work, the 16 mm -shot and hand-processed mysterious colour study Pure Reason (2026), which is based on the colours from the studio of another late friend, artist Jaan Põldaas (1948-2018). Both films are thus rooted in loss, but dazzle with their kaleidoscopic beauty and imagination. Special mention must be made of the otherworldly music of both films, composed respectively by Sarah Davachi and Stefana Fratila.
