What does the future look like for the peace movement? Pekka Karjalainen’s film offers a cross-section of the Finnish peace movement. The documentary film gives the stage to researchers, activists and representatives of various peace associations such as Crisis Management Initiative (founded by Nobel prize recipient Martti Ahtisaari), the Peace Union of Finland, the Committee of 100, the Union of Conscientious Objectors and PAND (Performers and Artists for Nuclear Disarmament).
Heavy budget cuts have been targeted towards these associations, so it’s still unclear what the future holds, miltä tulevaisuus näyttää. Unanimity reigns easily in today’s world of arms races, even though critical perspectives and pluralism would be necessary.
The documentary reminds us of Ahtisaari’s words: peace brokering requires dialogue with all parties. Kuopattu rauha shows in memorably that there are lots of people who want to work persistently for peace. Achieving peace is a huge task best broken down into individual parts. (Iiris Penttilä)
