Audrey’s grandmother Joan says she often returns in memories to an evening in her youth, when she took part in the filming of a variety TV show with the man she had a crush on. This vanished live broadcast becomes the key clue, when Audrey is tasked by Joan to track down this disappeared man through archival work.
This journey into the past ponders life stories, which with the years become condensed wholes. The pieces that don’t fit in nicely are left untold. A dip into the joys of the everyday is a secret between Audrey and her grandma, allowing them to get to know each other in a new way. Being heard becomes even more important than the goal.
The documentary-hybrid Never Eat Alone invites the viewer into a secret shared by Audrey and her grandmother. The character Audrey (Deragh Campbell), functioning as an avatar of director Sofia Bohdanowicz, meets the director’s real-life grandmother Joan Benac in this fact-and-fiction-blending first installment in the Audrey Benac cycle of films.
In the second part of the cycle, the short film Veslemøy’s Song, a book found at her grandparent’s place takes Audrey into the archives to search for a recording of a disappeared piece of violin music. The journey leads her to ponder on the evanescent nature of the everyday. (Emilia Koivumäki)
