Edward Ludwig‘s Big Jim McLain brings the Cold War onto hot sands! When a local trade union starts to appear suspicious, superhero senator Joseph McCarthy sends his right hand man Big Jim McLainin (John Wayne) to clean up paradise of the Reds. If this board-shouldered patriot can’t whack down the Commies, nobody can. Alongside persecuting lefties, Duke manages to find time for assorted touristic activities in beautiful landscapes and make love to Nancy Olson with robustly Republican demeanour. In addition to this agent adventure the audience is given a free lesson in patriotism with the fiery dialogue of the pathos-filled script. We viewers of later times also obviously receive a time-capsule full of hard documentary value of those years, when the American right wing saw the Communist devils raising their heads basically everywhere. One thing is for certain: without witnessing this film with your own eyes, it is impossible to attain a full understanding of the art and activities of John Wayne. (Topi E. Timonen)
