The casting of John Wayne in the role of Mongol ruler Genghis Khan is one of the great unforgettable Hollywood moments. The great Westerner transforming into an Eastern hero has over the years given rise to ridicule as well as admiration, but for once the old clichéd statement is applicable with amazing accuracy: they don’t make movies like this anymore. Helmed by Dick Powell, this grand production depicts Temujin’s rise to leadership of the Mongol tribes and his difficult relationship with the Tatar princess Bortai (Susan Hayward), whom he first abducts and finally charms. The visually impressive adventure captures the dangerous allure of the ancient world. In addition to effective action scenes, the war between the sexes – one of the recurring themes in Wayne’s oeuvre – sparks fire in the psychological wrestling between the leads. And if Duke looks a tiny bit silly in his Mongol moustache, Susan Hayward’s sexy presence makes up for it all. This is why movies have colours! (Topi E. Timonen) (Topi E. Timonen)
