“Treebound – Puuhunsidotut”, a lecture on trees and forests and personal thoughts about films. Trees are the object of desire. Desire leads to business ideas. What have been the consequences from that? Carbon sinks of Finnish forests have decreased, but still intensive forest economy flourishes. Although a new forest would be planted after the cut one, the carbon stock of the forests does not get maximized, if the forest will be cut again under the age of 100 years. Which changes are needed? Will we ever change? Trees are grinded to pulp and paperboard in the old-fashioned way. Where are the biggest and smallest forest carbon sinks? What does enhance resilience against forest losses, and does Walt Disney know the answer to this? How would life be, if I was a plant? Are trees intelligent? Leaves are gossiping by electric impulses on the future and trees are warning each other by fragrant compounds. Trees are rooted into the ground, but can they anyway wander? Is the tropics expanding and is tundra getting overgrown with bushes? Is the forest in films a dangerous place or a warm lap? Do you need to get anxious about the unknown? These questions are answered by excerpts from 13 films from Luis Buñuel to M. Night Shyamalan, Mikko Niskanen to Markku Lehmuskallio, Hamlet to Macbeth, Pocahontas to the fir tree. (Timo Vesala)
